Local Women Connected to Medical Breakthrough

Local Women Responsible for Medical Advancements — August 18, 2009

FORT COLLINS, CO – Two local women have strong connections to state-of-the-art advancements in global, medical device technology, and they recently met for the first time in downtown Fort Collins.

Marcia Coulson, president of Loveland-based Eldon James Corporation and spin-off business EJ BioMed in Fort Collins, is the exclusive designer and supplier of tubing and fittings for the high-tech Stryker® Medical hospital mattress. Developed to prevent pressure ulcers, the “no cord, no pump, no noise” mattress incorporates a unique technology that eliminates the need to repeatedly turn patients. The new design provides added convenience to medical staff and increased comfort to those receiving care.

Pat Stryker, local philanthropist and president of Bohemian Foundation, is a member of the entrepreneurial and innovative family that founded Stryker Corporation – a publicly traded company positioned as a global leader in the medical technology industry. Stryker Medical is a subsidiary of Stryker Corporation, which is dedicated to improving patients’ lives in more than 120 countries around the world.

EJ BioMed’s industry reputation, award-winning technology, and clean room manufacturing facility, caught the eye of Stryker Medical, earning EJ BioMed a contract to design and manufacture the components needed to pressurize the 105-pod cushion matrix in Stryker’s hospital mattress.

The two local business women met when Stryker recently toured EJ BioMed’s facility. The 10,000-s.f. light manufacturing clean room is housed on the first floor of the mixed-use Cortina building, which is located at the intersection of Oak, Howes and Canyon streets in downtown Fort Collins.

“EJ BioMed is proud to partner with a company that is so passionate about improving patient care,” said Coulson. “After working closely with Stryker Medical, and after meeting Pat Stryker in person, it’s easy to see how Pat’s generous, giving nature is inspired by the Stryker family’s tradition of helping people thrive.”

Coulson claims this success story is about much more than two local women finding a common connection in the high-tech marketplace, although she finds that connection exciting and rewarding.

“An important takeaway is that two global companies are combining their strengths to help people worldwide, and one of those companies is based in Fort Collins,” said Coulson. She says it is no coincidence that she and other entrepreneurs call Fort Collins home. “Fort Collins is a culturally vibrant community and it’s an international magnet for innovation. I can’t think of a better place to live and run my biotech business.”
