“You’ll like Scout more than New Relic. Or we’ll give you a puppy.*”
Scout is an emerging technology company offering application and server monitoring solutions. Their app monitoring is better, but it’s not as well known as the industry standard, New Relic. The fine folks at Scout are confident that users will prefer Scout over New Relic. The hard part is getting the attention of New Relic users and convincing them to give Scout a shot. Cost, inconvenience and uncertainty are big impediments to clients changing app and server monitoring software.
Our task was to launch the Scout brand at the big industry tradeshow, make a bold, compelling statement and grab the attention of an audience traditionally impervious to marketing messages—and do it quickly and efficiently. No problemo.
The solution was a new branding campaign including website design and tradeshow booth design. We studied the industry and found most other brand identities to be bland, boxy and blue. To stand out in the field and convey excitement about Scout’s superior solution, we created a brand identity with playful product illustrations, the happy hipster customer character and a big, bold claim: You’ll like Scout more than New Relic. Or we’ll give you a puppy.
The campaign grabs attention in a crowded marketplace and helps build brand recognition for Scout’s canine-based identity. A big, bold statement gets the job done, but the small stuff is just as important. A little detail like a client caricature can have a giant impact on a brand. Scout’s existing clients so loved seeing their caricatures on the Scout website, they used them to create emoticons. It’s a great example of how good branding can improve customer engagement. Scout’s banner ad campaign stood out from the crowd on an industry forum.
The campaign targeted software developers—a group wary of marketing and notorious for not clicking on banner ads.
Scout exceeded growth goals, saw a significant increase in sign ups and continued to help developers make love connections wit their product.
*No puppies were harmed in the marketing of this client. Since no one is not going to love Scout and considering that giving away puppies in a marketing campaign is apparently inhumane (thanks Humane Society!), Scout will instead make a donation to the Humane Society for every trial.
