Who we are

Toolbox is a creative and marketing agency in Fort Collins, Colorado building a bridge between the truth of science and the magic of design. Our Brand Engineering process blends art, science and intuition — converting tech talk into brand love.

We’ve concentrated our efforts where our work has the biggest impact and our clients do the boldest work: Climate Tech, Emerging Tech and Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing). 

What you’ll do

The graphic design intern will support and assist thecreative team during all phases of the production and design process of print and digital materials and preparation of Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Figma and Microsoft files.

As a Toolbox graphic design intern, you will be supervised by the senior designer and work on a variety of projects both on- and offline — including design for print, web and the wonderful world of Microsoft templates — whatever the client needs.

You will get lots of hands-on experience in all aspects of graphic design.

Your skills

Through relevant experience, we need you to demonstrate that you:  

  • Have a student-level knowledge of graphic designand/or production design
  • Are a born curiosity seeker and problem solver
  • Are ready to learn, excited to expand your skills and love a challenge
  • Are an exceptional communicator; articulate with both the written and spoken word, be it a quick email or a detailed proposal, be it in the boardroom or the studio
  • Are energetic, organized and work with a strong attention to detail
  • Are willing to work in a fast-paced environment with an “all-hands-on-deck” small creative team and wear many hats
  • Are comfortable taking direction and design critique and can work efficiently
  • Can manage project schedules, internal and external deadlines, and competing needs
  • Bonus points for illustration, animation, video editing and/or web development skills

Responsibilities

Toolbox prides ourselves onour agility, handling whatever comes our way with creativity and gusto. Here’san overview of what your day in the studio could look like:

Graphic design and production (75% of time)

  • Layout and produce all Toolbox Creative projects based on concepts developed by the creative team and/or client’s existing brand/style guidelines. The design intern will:
  • Create necessary templates (including MS Office templates), master files, stylesheets, etc.
  • Make edits and manage edit-rounds
  • Manage version control
  • Check artwork for completeness, correctness and adherence to brand standards
  • Research and modify images/assets (including photo retouching)
  • Prepare proofs or prototypes for clients
  • Generate production files, any necessary artwork and guidelines for digital projects
  • Conduct pre-flight quality assurance of files
  • Collaborate with the internal team and assist in conceptual development of logos, brand identities, campaigns and collateral
  • Gain expertise in the latest design and production software (Adobe, Canva, MS Office, Figma, basic HTML and whatever’s next)
  • Utilize the latest tools, trends, updates, shortcuts and techniques and continually expand knowledge of the graphic design process
  • Organize and maintain files on the Toolbox project server

    Project and schedule management (10%)

    • Participate in weekly staff and project meetingsand production-led conversations
    • Maintain an accurate daily record of all assigned projects, updating schedules and project status using Workamajig workflow and studio management system:
    • Enter all hours (billable and non-billable) accurately by end of day, every day
    • Update account and project managers on each assigned project and its progress
    • Ensure open and complete visibility into the status of project schedules
    • Communicate scheduling obstacles and recommend solutions
    • Utilize Toolbox Creative’s file nomenclature protocols

    General studio responsibilities / administration (15%) 

    • Toolbox marketing: Create and manage theproduction of business outreach materials
    • Toolbox Talks: Share your unique perspectives, passions and skills with the team
    • Check and reply to all communication promptly — all written communication should be professionally written and without spelling/grammatical errors
    • Help develop and support Toolbox Creative’s overall culture, values and purposeContribute to a team-oriented environment that is efficient, professional, proactive, lively and creative

    Education and training

    • Student-level graphic design training
    • Student-level design and production software experience
    • Work experience that demonstrates the skills we’re seeking — does not need to be in design
